How to pick a word of the year

Kim Peterson

Happy New Year! Ends and beginnings are natural times to reflect and revisit your hopes, dreams and goals. I’m always up for learning new ways to link my creative energy with goal setting.

I’ve never picked a word of the year before. I had never even heard of it. The idea is to pick a word that you want to act as your guiding principle, your mantra throughout the year. The word should reflect a concept that you want to embrace more of in the coming year and that is linked to your “why” and your goals for the year.

How do you pick a word of the year? For some, their word of the year is obvious. It just comes to them and they know it is their word. For others whose word is harder to come by, I recommend taking some quiet time to reflect, clear your head and brainstorm. Go out for a walk. Meditate. Take a drive. Take a shower. Whatever works for you. First, come up with a list of words that you love. Then, narrow them down to 3 to 5. Try each word out for size by getting feedback from others and/or examining whether patterns in your goals for 2019 may lead you to your word.

Below is a list of 5 words that I was trying out for this year. All are linking to she bloomz’ guiding principle of living life in full bloom.

  1. Sparkle: To be full of life and creativity

  1. Flourish: Grow or develop in a healthy or vigorous way

  1. Thrive: Grow, develop and prosper

  1. Shine: Give out a bright light, be very talented or perform well

  1. Blossom: To mature or develop in a promising or healthy way, to come into one’s own

Maybe one of these resonates with you! Follow us @shebloomz on any social media platform and tell us which word you chose and why! Happy New Year!
