Why I started she bloomz and launched the #youareamazingmovement
Hi There! I'm Kim McGrath
I’m an Oregon-grown writer, photographer, and creative with big dreams. I live for my husband, our 2 boys, outdoor adventures and peppermint ice cream.
TEARS AND THE TURNING POINT - WE NEVER SEE YOU. ALL YOU EVER DO IS WORK.
I was living what seemed like a dream life – working from home with a beautiful view in a safe and successful academic career and playing hard with lots of family travel and outdoor adventures.
BUT, I was always feeling burned out and socially disconnected, was struggling to keep up with basic adult responsibilities, and wasn’t always showing up for my family the way I wanted to. One day, when my 4-year-old said, “Mommy we never see you. All you ever do is work” I burst into tears and knew something had to change.
MIDLIFE CRISIS OR MIDLIFE AWAKENING? IT’S NEVER TOO LATE FOR NEW BEGINNINGS
I started to ask myself if this was it? Was I just going to continue along with the status quo in my safe career, living a penny-pinching lifestyle, feeling restricted in my giving efforts? Really?!? After FINALLY getting tired of my pity party and deciding that I could do better than this – I started reading every personal growth book and podcast I could get my hands on (Big Magic, You Are A Badass, Girl Wash Your Face, How I Built This, Goal Diggers, Awesome With Alison, Rise and For the Love of Money are a few of my favorites) I was seeing people that looked like me living life in full bloom and pulling off bigger things and I started to believe I could too! I had an AWAKENING and at age 46 started brainstorming ways I could use my ambition, professional skills and creativity in new directions that are closer to my heart and allow me more opportunity to help others grow in more personal ways – including more generosity and paying it forward.
NECESSITY IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION
I started with the #youareamazingmovement, an idea inspired by 2 separate but overlapping events – a friend’s caring connection with me through a kind greeting card + my procrastination leading to inventing a way to make greeting cards at home with materials on hand. The concept was so simple, it seemed ridiculous! I thought why not start a social movement that uses unique hand-made greeting cards to help women #explorecreateconnect. And so I did. And now we’re working to grow she bloomz into something much greater – including other fun products, personal growth books, life coaching services and retreats.
